The New Heaton herd was founded in the 1930’s by current owner Bob Douglas’
grandfather, Robert Douglas, initially being an Ayrshire herd. Robert Douglas came from Southdean in
Roxburghshire. |
| Some of the Ayrshire herd were shown with great success, including winning a Reserve
Championship at the London Dairy Show. |
In the 1960’s it was decided to increase production and to this end Friesians
were introduced. |
| When Bob joined the business in 1987 he quickly recognised the benefits of the
Holstein breed, after seeing their attributes in both Holland and the USA. Since
then the most reliable and proven Holstein bulls from these countries have been
used. |
| In 1992 the herd was moved from the original site at Ashington Farm, near
Morpeth, to its present site at New Heaton, with the herd growing from 100 to
170 milking cows. |
| The herd has been closed since 1993, and is a member of the SAC premium health
scheme. |
| The farm covers 260 acres, all of which are grass, and achieves a herd average
of 9,500 litres at 4.15% fat and 3.5% protein, on 2x day milking. |
